Question by Syed A: critical essay on the article about handmaid’s tale:http://www.thestar.com/article/571999?
In the article called “Atwood novel too brutal, sexist for school” Edwards claims that the handmaid’s tale is inappropriate for grade 12 students. He thinks that the book is flooded with inappropriate language, and the book tone is somehow anti-Islamic and anti-Christian. Also, he says grade 12 students are too young to read the handmaid’s tale because it has some elements which grade 12 students might not understand.
It is agreed that if students repeat some word from the handmaid’s tale, they might get suspended. However, if students are encouraged to discuss the handmaid’s tale in front of the class, students will become more open. In the future, they won’t hesitate to discuss any harm in the society. For example, in Afghanistan Taliban are causing nothing more than havoc in their society. For Taliban anything can be okay, from homosexuality to drugs. But for others everything is wrong from eating through a spoon to watching television.
In Afghanistan not to speak of teaching this type of novel, any good kid stories like Cinderella, snow white etc can’t be taught. Therefore, the Afghans can’t bring out issues which are damaging their society. They can’t speak for their rights because they are not open. In Islam, veil aka Hijab is completely up to a woman. If she wants to wear it, she can wear it. Islam says if a woman doesn’t want to wear hijab, no one is allowed to force a woman to wear it. Islam says, “Getting education is compulsory for every Muslim man and woman.” But according to Taliban education is not necessary for woman, and they banned education on women in Afghanistan. This is absolute nonsense. Taliban are an evil cult which has changed the divine image of woman into something evil and symbol of erotica “A sex tool”. Women of Afghanistan aren’t courageous enough to tell their problem to the whole world. Because they have never debated about these issues, they are not bold enough to speak about these issues. The book “is rife with brutality towards and mistreatment of women (and men at times), sexual scenes, and bleak depression,” I can’t really understand what it is my son is supposed to be learning from this fictional drivel. Edwards said in a letter to the school’s principal. In contrary to what Edwards said, it is believed that by discussing those issues about mistreatment of women in all around the world. Students can make connections, and this would be the good practice for students. Some students might stand up for the women rights.
In conclusion, schools shouldn’t hesitate to teach and discuss the handmaid’s tale. This novel is beneficial for grade 12 students because they can become more open to discuss issues like aids, homosexulaity, pronography, wife sawping, gayism, and drugs.
may some one take out some grammatical mistakes and structural mistakes.

Not entirely sure about the point that is being made. The criticism that is embedded is not just toward a theocratic misogynistic society but rather it is also holds up a mirror on our existing practices. The issue of identity is the central issue theme of the novel. It is premised on certain themes emergent from de Beauvoir’s Le Deuxiéme Sexe.
